Evaluation Task 4: Target Audience For Our Thriller

My target audience would be from 16-30 years old. I think that the our movie idea based on suspence and scary factors as the things that you do not see, stalkers etc. would not be suitable for a very young audience because they would not like to think about the dangers outside or psychological diversions in the normal thinking (the idea of the thriller could be seen metaphorically as well). Therefore I think that younger people than 16 would not take it seriously and would not enjoy it. However, people around our age and above like thrillers and mysteries in general. Many of us start to get interested in psychological thrillers and that is the reason why I have chosen this particular audience. The thriller would also suit people above 20 because it is energetic, creates tension and is not very common (blind spot idea). I think that most people would go to school or college or work. No matter what young people are always interested in films, music, sport etc. Especially people still going to school and college have the time to organize movie nights and watch a movie with their friends.

My secondary audience would be 30+ because I think that people that have a family and go to work would also enjoy watching it in their leisure time. If the movie is well developed they would like the plot, the twist in it and the interesting ideas and the realization. In addition, this movie motivates the audience to think and can be interpreted in many different ways - psychologically, politically etc.

Our film is aimed at a male and female audience. At male because the lead female character would be an attractive woman. At female because Jenna's attitude to life shows her feministic views and also she is a very successful woman, superior to men in her job, which would attract more women, wanting to show what they can in life and career.

In general, I think that the genre would attract more males because it would be scary and mysterious. Some women prefer romantic comedies to thrillers/horrors. Therefore I think that males would be more interested in the movie. However, the movie has psychology in it which is more popular thinking under women. I think that males and females would be attracted by the thriller depending on character and interests.

Evaluation Task 3: What Institution Would Make My Film?

I think that Fox Searchlight Pictures would make our thriller because they take more risks in general and invest in low budget movies e.g. Cyrus (2010) - budget was $7 Millions, My Name Is Khan $8.4 Millions. It specializes in independent, British films and horrors. In addition, they take risks with unexpeienced directors as Whip It (2009) which was Drew Barrymore's directorial debut. The actors that they use are often not famous.

They have recently made a similar psychological thriller as ours which is the Black Swan (2010). Their lead role is played by a beautiful female strong character as in our thriller. In addition, the director Darren Aronofsky is  known for making less commercial movies and low budget (Requiem for a Dream (2000) films. We feel that this is similar to ours and would appeal to similar audience. They have successfully marketed and distributed the film to a main stream audience, hopefully they would do the same with ours.

Another film the institution did was Joshua (2007) which is a horror/thriller movie with unknown actors as ours. The director of the movie George Ratliff is also an unknown director - did not direct commercial movies. Joshua is a boy who is jealous of his little sister and start to terrorizes his family. The similarities are: the things that the parents don't see at first, torturing and sadistic behaviour which could be associated with our thriller and the person who has taken the photos of the people, he might be torturing them. As Fox Searchlight are owned by the media institution Twenty Century Fox who in turn are owned by the Media Conglomerate News International they have access to wide spread marketing and distribution facilities and could afford to take a risk on a film as ours because they could off set the costs by selling the product to anciallary such as DVD and international releases.
